This Week...

Gwenview adds support for animated pictures. Digikam adds more image editing plugins: Sheartool, anti-vignetting, lensdistortion. KWin adds dynamic keybindings. PwManager adds Smartcard interface.
The process leading to KDE 3.4 continues. As laid out in the KDE 3.4 Release Schedule, Beta 1 is being prepared. So we saw some announcements from Stephan Kulow this week regarding commits to CVS. On Monday the 3rd of January he said:
Today I will create a KDE_3_4_BETA_1 tag and with that being done, KDE CVS is in temporary freeze until the tar balls are reviewed. This means for the next three days only commits are allowed that can be considered urgent and safe. This time will be used to check the tag for show stoppers - obviously it's not good if this is a moving target.

So please everyone: double check and if in doubt: send your patch to kde-core-devel@kde.org and let it review. I will update the tag as soon as I see an important enough problem fixed.

Translations are allowed all the time and I will take the version of today in any way.
And today, the 7th of January this announcement:
Thanks to those that were patient enough to only commit urgent commits. Now CVS is open for normal activity again (normal as in the time after feature list freeze).

kdepim was prepared and opened for commits yesterday due to a developer meeting and kde-i18n was prepared tuesday because of the size of that module. You can check what went into beta1 by looking at the KDE_3_4_0_BETA_1 tag in CVS.

The next step will be feature and string freeze on February 5, 2005.
It just so happened that I needed to peruse some manufacturer's documentation this week. I dislike pdf's mostly due to the tools. KGhostview is slow, acroread is fast but doesn't support things like mouse wheels and other useful things. KPDF has been under active development, and the development branch was merged into HEAD this week, so I got the chance to test it out. The loading and rendering is quick, although acroread renders slightly faster with the default settings. With asynchronous generation disabled, KPDF renders as fast as acroread. The font rendering is a little fuzzy compared to acroread. KPDF supports cut and paste, either graphic or text, and allows search. There is a full screen presentation mode. Kudos to Enrico Ros and Albert Astals Cid for their fine work.
Gilles Caulier announced that a new release of DigikamImagePlugins 0.7.1 is out for your image correction pleasure.
